The Excise Department says more than 300 million glass bottles of various capacities of liquor and 160 million metal cans filled with beer were sold last year.
Deputy Commissioner of Excise Kapila Kumarasinghe says that most of these glass bottles and metal cans have been released into the environment without being reused or recycled.
Most of the glass bottles added to the environment have a volume of 175 ml. He emphasizes that a special project will be launched to prevent the pollution caused by the disposal of such discarded bottles and metal cans.
A mechanism will be set up to reclaim discarded glass bottles from liquor outlets and a program to destroy them by metal can machines will be implemented accordingly.
